Fossil fuels such as oil, coal and gas may well be the primary source of energy for millions of people the world over, but many of the environmental problems the world is facing today is as a result of the world’s dependence on fossil fuels. Air pollution, oil spills, global warming and acid rain are some of the legacies we’re contending with today because of the burning of these fossil fuels.
Burning fossil fuels puts carbon into the atmosphere leading to the buildup of greenhouse gases, and which results in global warming. Not only that, the world’s dependence on fossil fuels means that countries have to fight to protect sources of oil. In fact the demand for fossil-fuel is the cause of outbreaks of fighting in the Middle East and other parts of the world as nations fight for oil and natural gas. The world is constantly being warned about the dangers of continuing to burn fossil fuels. We’re running out of time and further proof of this is the melting of the West Antarctic ice sheet.
Where the Most Fossil Fuels are Burned
Sub-Saharan Africa is the region which has the most people living without electricity and this is where a lot of fossil fuels are burned. Now the new Tesla battery is being looked upon in a new light as a means to save the world, and indeed Africa from burning fossil fuels. These batteries store renewable energy for longer and at half the current cost. They are seen as an energy revolution that has the possibilities to transform Africa’s power supply dilemma.
Changing the Way the World Uses Energy
The Tesla battery has been launched by a Californian tech company Tesla, and will be able to power a home for as long as 5 hours. In fact Elon Musk from Tesla said they had Africa in mind with developing the wall-mounted battery. Tesla’s home battery system, Powerwall, is a rechargeable lithium-ion battery which has been designed to store energy at a residential level for backup power and self-consumption of solar power generation. The 10 kWh Powerwall will be providing enough power to operate the most commonly needed circuits such as lighting, the refrigerator, alarm system, computer and electrical outlets.
The company Tesla is also wanting to present the world with a business-based battery-storage system and this will be known as the Powerpack. The boxes of these batteries are designed to be easy to install, and users will be able to monitor their power usage by connecting to the Internet.
More Countries Taking up the Challenge
The renewable power billionaire Elon Musk has introduced the world to his new Powerwall, and fossil fuel companies will at last have met their match. The Tesla Energy system is designed for domestic users, and entire communities could build micro-grid power supply systems around such a 10 MWh energy storage system and be fed by renewable energy generation such as solar- or wind power.
China is also preparing to be the world’s renewable energy superpower. They have the largest installed base of wind power and there are also Chinese companies producing their own energy storage units based on lithium ion technology which is for domestic and commercial use.
What the World Needs Now
At last something is being done to save the world from Fossil Fuels, and it looks as though the concept around the Tesla Battery is catching around the world as a last-ditch effort to preserve our exquisite planet.
